SCOPE

This specification establishes the priming, painting and topcoat color requirements for components in accordance with the customer contract specifications. This procedure shall be complied with invoked on appropriate engineering drawings for the use of aluminum or steel sheet, plate and shapes (tube, rod, channel, etc.)

1.1 Exceptions

1.1.1 Drawings with Undefined Finish Requirements for Aluminum
On Engineering drawings for fabricated aluminum parts that have no noted finish requirements, it shall be inferred that MIL-C-5541 Alodine/Irridite finish and a suitable surface preparation for said finish shall apply. (Ref. 3.1)

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

3.1

Surface Preparation
All material substrate surfaces shall receive proper pre-treatment to ensure subsequent application of primer/paint to the parent material per the applicable MIL standard or OEM specifications and/or processes. Typical methods of surface preparation for steel and/or aluminum include:

• Bead Blast, see A-A-59316 for abrasive materials
• Degreasing solution
• Mechanical Preparation such as sanding/grinding
• Alodine/Irridite per MIL-DTL-5541

Parts shall be cured and dried prior to additional processing

3.2

Primer and Paint Application
All primer and paint shall be applied to the parent material per the applicable MIL standard or OEM specifications and/or processes. If a conflict exists between the primer listed in Table 1 and the corresponding primer identified in the Top Coat specification listed in Table 1, the Top Coat specification/requirement takes precedence.

3.3

Paint Process and Part Quality
All material built to this specification shall adhere to the paint process and part quality requirements identified on the purchase order, engineering drawings and supporting documentation. The in process inspection, rejection and rework requirements of the appropriate process specification shall be followed, i.e., MIL-PRF-85285, as identified in Table 1.

The vendor shall ensure that all material is processed in accordance with ITW Military GSE IndustriesTIQAM02, Quality Assurance Manual.

3.4 Powder Coating
Powder Coating shall comply with MIL-PRF-24712 with tailoring as follows:

3.4.1

3.4.2

3.4.3

Type X, Polyurethane (section 1.2.1)

Use acceptable industry practice for resin and curing system (section 3.2)

For aluminum applications use MIL-DTL-5541 for surface preparation with tailoring as follows:

3.4.3.1 Type I or Type II (section 1.2.1), vendor shall select a type and not mix methods.
3.4.3.2 Class 1A (section 1.2.2)
3.4.3.3 Mechanically damaged areas may be touched-up. (sections 3.4 and 3.5)
3.4.3.4 No inspection or testing required. (section 4.1)

3.4.4

For steel application use Federal Specification TT-C-490 with tailoring as follows:

3.4.4.1 Type II chemical conversion (section 1.2.2)
3.4.4.2 No inspection or testing (section 4.1)

3.5

Vendor shall forward coating detail sheets and sample coupons for each shipment.
